Excellencies,
Distinguished guests,
Ladies and gentlemen,

Good afternoon!

It is indeed a pleasure for me to participate in the 3rd China-South Asia Cooperation Forum, co-organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, and the Government of Yunnan Province.

China has continued to play a significant role in the Maldives’ development journey. Our relationship is grounded in our shared historical ties, sovereign equality, mutual respect, and the Maldives’ firm commitment to the One-China Principle.

As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between our two countries this year, it is worthwhile to note the important contributions made by China towards the socio-economic development of the Maldives. From social housing to the development of critical

infrastructure, the construction of the Foreign Ministry building, the National Museum, and the landmark Maldives China Friendship Bridge, amongst others, demonstrates the invaluable friendship between the two countries. Chinese projects and contributions has had a positive impact on every region of the country, and has improved the livelihood of thousands of Maldivian citizens through these generous contributions.

The international community has worked hard to put the nightmare of the COVID-19 pandemic behind us. We therefore look forward very much to the resumption of flights and connectivity between Maldives and China to pre-pandemic levels. We are eagerly awaiting to welcome back Chinese visitors and tourists to these shores, and are closely working with the relevant authorities to ensure that travel companies, tour operators and airlines are ready to initiate discussions on the resumption of travel and tourism with the Chinese market. Tourism, is the most important industry in the Maldives, and China’s assistance in resuming the arrival of Chinese visitors, will be greatly appreciated.

The development and sustainability of the Maldivian economy depend on our on-going strong partnership with China and other partner countries. It is therefore in the interests of both countries to explore new areas of cooperation and to strengthen existing ones, as also to initiate new projects in the Maldives, and to continue our political dialogue. It is our hope that this relationship will continue to grow from strength to strength.

On behalf of the Government and the people of Maldives, I take this opportunity to thank the Government and the people of China, for the continued support and assistance provided to the Maldives.

Thank you!
